First Vision 218 meeting

Come join our first VISION218 meeting at 1:00 pm in room ARTB 211.

Hello everyone,

First , we would like to thank all of you for your interest in VISION218. We are very excited to meet you all. As you may know, our mission is to create a design community, specifically graphic design, at El Camino . However, we welcome all forms of designs: architecture, fashion, media, animation, and others. We want to create a social atmosphere where we can gain more knowledge about design.

As a club we have been involved with many professional projects and we are planning to have more in the future. We also have fun outings planned; such as, exhibitions to various galleries as well as attend lectures to understand the industry of design and if you love good food this is the club for you!

We look forward  to see you all there!!

HAITI POSTER PROJECT

El Camino College is contributing to a charitable cause by supporting and collaborating in the HAITI POSTER PROJECT. Multiple El Camino College  professors are supporting and encouraging students to submit their design to this worthy cause by offering it as an optional assignment or part of the curriculum. The Haiti Poster Project is calling for entries and we encourage you as artist or designer to help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Package Design Collection

I've been posting every package design site or inspired link I could find on twitter but here they are in a neat package. You can also check out our featured artist which happens to be a package redesign. I know the project restricts you with the 'tool' requirement but I think you can justify tons of stuff as tools. A good example is the image for this blog. If you find more along the way please post the links as comments. Hope this helps, AD 1!

The Design Process

Vision 218 wants to show you something that is very stressed in design: the process!  The process helps designers create solid design and concept through planning. Great ideas happen on a whim, not good design. To show an example of the design process we will take you through the process we used to make a logo for Herman Cleaner’s, Vision 218’s first client.  They are eco friendly dry cleaners that do not produce the hazardous waste that most other dry cleaners do. To check out their site go here. The logo on their site is the final logo that we made through the design process.

Photoshop CS4: A NEW BEAST OR AN OVER-GLORIFIED TWIN?

A question many avid Photoshop users are wondering is whether or not, the recently released, Creative Suite 4 is all its cracked up to be? Are the upgrades and new features worth the upgrade for existing users or is everyone better off sticking with CS3? Firstly, the most notable new and improved feature Photoshop has is its content-aware scaling feature. This makes it possible for you to shrink the size of an image without distorting the figures within the image or having to change the aspect ratio. May come in handy if you have strong juxtaposing figures in your foreground and background. Another, feature is the new three-dimensional tool which converts regular 2D layers in to 3D layers. This new feature not only supports 3D images, but also allows you to cast light and add texture to the image.   read more »

The 20 Typefaces

I recently came across a great article called "20 Typefaces To Start a Designer's Career"; revived by Jacob Cass from an article in the archives of Typophile. This article definitely opened my eyes about type and I believe it’s a place where we should “live” as students; trying to perfect the greatest fonts ever made and not be shackled by the infamous HELVETICA.

20 Typefaces Is Perfect
